COURSE DESCRIPTION

Hawkeye Composition II will meet every day to discuss the reading from The Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing, to conduct research both in the lab and library, and to implement the writing process for three essays and one essay exam.

Composition II develops a student’s writing skills by continuing to emphasize fluency, organization, the use of supporting details, and research techniques.  Writing is approached as a recursive process that includes prewriting strategies, drafting, revising, and editing.  The course helps students define a sense of audience and purpose in their writing.

Grading Scale is published in the student handbook.

Passing

Passing the class for a high school English credit requires a D- or better.

Passing the class for HCC credit requires a C- or better.  If a student does not pass, he or she will pay for the class and retake it in the future to earn the credit.

Makeup procedure is published in the student handbook.

It is in the student’s best interest to make up work as soon as possible to avoid getting further behind.  It is the student’s responsibility to turn in the late work within the allowable time.  If a student is absent from class on the day an essay is due, the student must e-mail or drop off the essay on the day it’s due in order to avoid losing points for being late.

Late work procedure is published in the student handbook.

Attendance policy is published in the student handbook.

Special needs statement is published in the student handbook.

Grading

A piece of writing will be considered a work-in-progress until all of the criteria for it are met to the teacher’s standards.  A student is given 1 week to make corrections and revisions on an essay before turning it in for a final score.

Errors in punctuation, usage, grammar, and spelling will be docked on the first drafts. Each mistake will be 1 point off the total.  If the same mistake reoccurs, it will only be counted as 1 mistake.  Each of the 15 comma rules is a separate mistake.  The same goes for other punctuation, usage, and grammar rules that were reviewed in Composition and were expected in HCC Comp I.

Sources of information

When researching a topic, the following sources are acceptable:

q  Hawkeye CC databases (accessed with a HCC username and password)

q  Hawkeye ebrary

q  Professional journals

q  Newspaper sources

q  Professional human sources

q  Encyclopedias and almanacs

(The free web is off limits due to its lack of professionalism and reliability.)

All sources used should be relevant, reliable, and recent.

Citing sources

The use of MLA citation to cite work that is quoted, paraphrased or summarized is required.  Another person’s ideas are protected in this way, and intellectual property is respected in this way.

Citing sources strengthens your own writing with professional voices who support what you believe.

Any suspicion of plagiarism will be investigated carefully.  If a student is found negligent of citing or of turning in another person’s work in part or whole, he or she will lose full credit and not be given a chance to redo the assignment.  If there is a second account of plagiarism, the student will be removed from the class with a failing grade.  The Hawkeye CC Composition department will also be notified of this problem.

All students are expected to do their own, individual work.  Collaboration is limited to idea generation and discussion, proofreading, and peer review.  The student bears ultimate responsibility for his or her work on all assignments, big or small.  This includes following the specific guidelines for each type of writing assignment, proofreading, and quoting and citing.  As the instructor, I am willing to conference about specific questions that arise about writing assignments.

Other assignments

Book exercises and other short assignments must be turned in at the beginning of class on their due date.  No credit will be given to late assignments because we go over them in class the day they are due. The exception is for students who are absent the day it’s due  or were absent the day it was assigned.
